Lights from the city

This week has been a really good week regarding northern light activity. Sadly, it is not always possible to go out to beautiful locations.
Maybe your day job is demanding, or you are tired, sick, have friends visiting you... but you look out of your window, and see the majestic display of the northern lights.

But... you live in a city, there are city lights, and maybe not too nice landscapes... what to do?

The answer is simple: Go out and shoot! But also: enjoy the show. Life through the viewfinder is interesting, but not always as good as through your naked eyes.

This shot was taken last night in my garden. You can see the city lights, the light pollution, and obviously the composition is not the best either.

There is little to do in this situations: we have to avoid the street lights creating halos in our picture by choosing the right angle, and test the exposure settings before shooting: there is too much environmental light to just shoot in regular settings: in this case, I shot with ISO 160 and 13 seconds exposure. The other option would have been to shoot with ISO 1000 and shorter exposure, but the northern light would become too weak due to the light pollution.

It is nice to see that the selfish lady is still with us!
