How to photograph the northern lights with a point-and-shoot camera

This is a very common question: is it possible to photograph the northern lights with my standard-quality point-and-shoot camera?

The answer is not easy: maybe

If your camera has scenery modes, have a look at them, and try to find any of the next options:

- Starry sky mode
- Fireworks mode
- Night scenery
- Long shutter

Please note that some cameras have a "Night portrait" mode. It is possible to take pictures of northern lights with that mode, but it activates the flash, which is not desirable (as explained in the end of the previous post)
